New Parking Ordinance Goes Into Effect
At the September 8, 2025 City Council meeting, the Huntsville City Council unanimously passed Ordinance No. 2025-7, amending Title 8 of the City’s Vehicles & Traffic Code to address parking on narrow residential streets. No parking signs have been installed on residential streets in the Rockwood Subdivision.
Why This Matters
The ordinance ensures that fire trucks, ambulances, and police vehicles can reach homes quickly and safely. Parking on both sides of narrow residential streets has obstructed emergency access, increasing risks during medical calls, fires, and other urgent situations. Improving access helps protect lives when every second counts.
What’s Changing
- The Public Works Department identified residential streets that are too narrow for safe passage when vehicles are parked on both sides.
- The streets have been designated as “No Parking” zones on one side, with signage installed.
- Parking will still be allowed on the opposite side as long as it does not obstruct traffic, block driveways, mailboxes, or emergency access.
Enforcement and Penalties
The Huntsville Police Department will begin enforcing this ordinance once the “No Parking” signs have been installed. Residents are encouraged to find alternative parking arrangement during this time. Please note:
- Citations may be issued even if signage has not yet been installed, so residents are urged to use caution.
- Violations will be treated as a Class C misdemeanor, with the following fine structure:
- $100 for the first offense
- $250 for the second offense
- $500 for the third offense
- Responsibility for any violation rests with the registered owner of the vehicle, regardless of who parked it.
For questions or to report a street that may need review, please contact the City Hall at 479-738-6607.
Thank you for helping keep Huntsville safe, responsive, and accessible for all.
City of Huntsville Honored as a 2025 Trendsetter City by Arkansas Business
The City of Huntsville has been recognized as a 2025 Trendsetter City by Arkansas Business in the Tourism Development/Creative Culture category for the revitalization of the historic Basham Building.
Built in 1919 and long considered a downtown landmark, the Basham Building was transformed into a modern community center after renovations began in June 2023. The space now serves civic groups, nonprofits, families, and local organizations, filling a critical need for accessible public meeting space in Huntsville and Madison County.
The project is part of Huntsville’s broader placemaking efforts, which include public art, park improvements, and strategic economic development initiatives. With support from the Arvest Foundation and Madison County Telephone, the City recently added a full audio‑visual and teleconferencing system, making the Basham Community Center the first public facility in the area equipped for hybrid meetings and community engagement.
The center also celebrates Huntsville’s heritage through a rotating vintage automobile display and resident‑donated memorabilia, drawing visitors to the Historic Commercial District and strengthening local identity.
Huntsville invested $85,984 in renovations, supported by 503 volunteer hours and more than $8,900 in donated materials — a testament to strong community partnerships and long‑term commitment to downtown revitalization.
Thank you to Arkansas Business for recognizing Huntsville’s dedication to creative culture, historic preservation, and community‑driven growth. Read the article.
Improving Safety Along US412
Huntsville’s commercial corridor along US412—near McDonald’s, Walmart, and 412 Express—has seen a concerning rise in traffic volume and vehicular accidents over recent years. Residents and local businesses alike have voiced concerns, and the City is taking action.
What’s Being Proposed
The City of Huntsville has formally submitted letters to the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) requesting:
- Dedicated turn lanes to ease congestion and reduce crash risk
- Speed limit review to enhance safety and emergency response access
These changes were informed by Huntsville’s Vision Zero planning study, which highlighted this area as part of the city’s high-injury network.
Why This Area Matters
As a federal highway under ARDOT’s jurisdiction, any improvements to US412 require state-level coordination. We appreciate ARDOT’s ongoing partnership and remain committed to advocating for these enhancements.

Moving Forward
Improving roadway safety is a shared responsibility. The City will continue working with ARDOT to pursue targeted infrastructure upgrades, creating safer streets for drivers, pedestrians, and emergency services.
