Fines or payments may be paid in person, by cash or check, in the District Court offices, M-F 8:00 to 4:30.

If you miss your court date you should call the District Court office as soon as possible.  If you miss your court appearance a warrant may be issued for your arrest.

If you are charged with a routine traffic violation, such as speeding (most cases), failure to yield, running a stop sign, and other minor violations, you may call the District Court Office and will be allowed to pay the fine and costs without appearing in court.

If you wish to plead “not guilty” to the traffic offense, or are charged with a more serious charge, you must appear at the appointed date and time on your citation or summons.  Examples of “must appear” charges would include: reckless driving, DWI, possession of a controlled substance, assault, or battery.

When your name is called the judge will make sure that you understand your rights.  You will be asked to enter a plea of “guilty,” “not guilty,” or “no contest.”

If your plea is “not guilty,” you will be given a date to return for your trial.  If your plea is “guilty” or “no contest,” your fines or punishment will be established.  You may then either pay your fine in full or set up a payment schedule.

If your charge is an offense in which you could receive jail time, you may ask the judge at your first court appearance for one to be appointed to you.  The judge will review your case and have you complete an Affidavit of Indigence to determine if you qualify for a public defender.
