Polk Square & Memorial Park

In 2012 as the city celebrated its 175th anniversary, our historic downtown square was officially named Polk Square.  The Square was named in honor of the Evan Shelby Polk family who donated the land for the city public square. Polk Square hosts the Farmers Market from April to October as well as the city’s annual Lighting of The Square, the Friday before Thanksgiving Week.

Main Street Memorial Park, located in the Historic Downtown District, is home to two Civil War markers, a gazebo, and the Tower of Valor dedicated to the memory of those who gave their lives in the service of our country.  Memorial pavers have been placed in the walkways to honor loved ones that have served.

All tee pads are made of concrete with signs on which to hang your bags. Adjacent to our airport, the highest in Arkansas, you will enjoy the spectacular views of the Ozarks. Come experience the Windy Ridge for yourself! Play on your own or at times league play is available to join. League play runs for 10 weeks per season during spring, summer, and autumn. See our homepage for more details or contact Parks League Director Carmen Watkins at [email protected].

Walking & Jogging Trail at Mitchusson Park

The Austin Smith walking trail is a lovely 10′ wide path surrounded by nature.  The trail was completed in 2015 funded largely by an Arkansas State Highway and Transportation grant and constructed in large pary by our Street Department.  The path is approximately 1/3 of a mile of paved walking surface and holds some steep grade changes.  The trail adjoins Mitchusson Park near the pavilion.

Mountain Bike Skills Course

In Spring of 2018 construction was completed on the first bicycle specific skills building course in Madison County at Mitchusson Park. The course includes several features (or stunts) for all ages to develop the bike handling skills necessary to adopt mountain biking as a form of recreation. The features, manufactured in state by Fast Rack Modern Cycling Solutions, are constructed of steel and cedar and designed to mimic some of the elements found on mountain bike trails in the Region. Additionally, volunteers played a large role in completing the project by hand-building several natural rock gardens to help get cyclists used to riding over mixed surfaces common in the Ozarks.  The Mountain Bike Skills Course was made possible through a partnership with the City of Huntsville and the Ozark Off Road Cyclists, a regional nonprofit that has been building and maintaining mountain bike trails across the Ozarks since 1997. The Ozark Off Road Cyclists group was awarded a grant from the Walton Family Foundation to match an investment from the City of Huntsville, and oversaw the construction of the course.                                                                                                   ~Eric Blocker
